TTT- Top Ten Series I’d Like to Start but Haven’t Yet!

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
Some of of these books have been on my MUST READ list for as long as I can remember, others are just kind of random.
In no particular order…
*drum roll please*

by J.K. Rowling
Before you all FREAK OUT and slay me…. hear me out. These books were huge back when I was working at an after school program so I have read my fair share of excerpts throughout the series. I have also seen a few of the movies. I am the kind of person that has to do things in order. I felt cheated because of the bits and pieces I’d read and seen, so felt it would be unfair to enter a legendary series after giving it such crappy respect. I know, IIII KNOW!
*
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
by Rick Riordan

This series looks fabulous! I love fantasy in general. There is nothing better than an adventure that feels magical. Plus I’m a big fan of Greek Mythology. I’ve heard people rave about these books and every time I see any of them listed on any review site there are tons of stars next to it!
*
Jessica Darling
by Megan McCafferty

Believe me. I know. This is shocking, especially considering my love for kissing books is no secret. I blame this on the sad truth that I got into YA late in the game!
*
The Tomorrow Series
by John Marsden
I have been drawn to this series ever since I started reading YA. Initially I read so many great reviews about it, but then read some more that weren’t so great. I ended up choosing other books that seemed to have a better track record… kinda wish I went with my gut. I WILL READ THIS SERIES!
*
The Infernal Devices
by Cassandra Clare

Again, my issue with order! I love the City of Bones series, but not really a fan of going back in time. I enjoyed the Star Wars movies, but hated it when the new ones came out focusing on the past! Drove me crazy. However, I purchased the first two books this week so they will get read!!
*
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
by Laini Taylor

I am a total sucker for paranormal romance. There is something insanely sexy about otherworldly creatures! I’ve heard good things about these books and they just look damn cool.
*
Altered
by Jennifer Rush

Honestly, I know very little about this series other than that it is a mystery and at least 5 people have been harassing me to read it!
*
Graceling Realm
by Kristin Cashore

Everything about this series seems right up my alley, but for whatever reason I’m not usually down with Kings, Princesses, Princes, etc. Yes, that sounds silly, but that is the main reason I’ve held off on reading these!
*
Mara Dyer
by Michelle Hodkin
Okay. I’ve heard this series is crazy good. At least Judith says so. She usually knows what’s up, so I took her word for it and ordered them. Oh and apparently NOAH SHAW is my kinda guy.
*
Lunar Chronicles
by Marissa Meyer
This is a series everyone keeps talking about, but I can’t bring myself to read. I really really want to, but I’m so turned off by the whole Cinderella spin. I’m never into that. With that said, at some point I am bound to take a leap of faith and just read them.

Encore:
Please be nice.
I get it. Harry Potter. Jessica Darling.
I already feel like this:

So tell me….. where should I start??
Any others that should be added to my list??

hahah you are not alone in your feeling! There are too many books to read and too little time – we ALL have series that we should have started by now and just haven’t been able to.
I have read many of these and you really can’t choose wrong with whatever you read first – Graceling, Cinder, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, The Infernal Devices, Mara Dyer, Altered – they are ALL good! Obviously Harry Potter is too
Happy Reading!

Don’t worry!! The only series on this list that I HAVE read is Harry Potter!! So I’m practically just as behind as you
I have purchased the first Mara Dyer book, and I’ll be reading it shortly, after I finish all the books I have that are due back to the library!! Also, I am a little turned off by the Cinder series, because I’m just not really too big a fan of fairy tale retellings. Anyways, good luck with your list!! I think you should start with Harry Potter
Glad to hear I’m not alone in this! But… at least you have read HP… apparently that is a YA milestone that I clearly missed. Let me know how Mara Dyer is if you get to it before me! I’m excited about that one.
For sure!! I’ll let you know
I didn’t think I would like Cinder, but I fell in love. I normally like fairy-tale retellings, but I was more turned off by the sci-fi aspect. I’m so glad I felt pressured to read it though, because it’s awesome! I highly recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone–I don’t even like paranormal that much but I really enjoyed that book!
Harry. Potter.
Ha, ok I’ll write an actual comment now!
Daughter of Smoke and Bone…wow. Beautiful writing. Reminds me of Tahereh Mafi, you will LOVE these books! Not a lot of kissing but the entire world and story so totally make up for it!
Graceling–fantasy amaze balls.
Mara Dyer-Yeah, we’ve talked about this I have to get on this too AND the Jessica Darling series…I don’t even know what those are about…
AHHH THE INFERNAL DEVICES!!!!! Last book comes out this month so you don’t have to agonize over waiting for the ending!! Love love love those books!! Maybe even a little more than Mortal Instruments…no joke…
I hate reading series, especially tons of books series so late in the game! I know if I read one I will want to read them ALL– Harry would devour a month of my life… but sounds like he’d be worth it.
Oh… and “GRACELING- FANTASY AMAZE BALLS” is quite possibly the best comment I have ever gotten. We still need to read Madmans together. My copy should be coming this week.
So…. yeah… not gonna judge or anything, but I don’t know if we can continue to be friends until you read Harry Potter.
Only kidding. But seriously, read HP. You won’t be disappointed and the movies are so much deeper having read the books. Percy Jackson is also a great series… I loved the pants off of it!
I still need to read the Infernal Devices series; I’ve read Clockwork Angel, but haven’t made it to the rest yet. I’m waiting for Clockwork Princess to come out!
Thanks for not judging. Or at least not saying anything overly mean to me. haha I’m excited about Infernal Devices too— and after all the great things I’m hearing, I might have to ignore my inner hatred for going back in time.
I totally forgot about Mara Dyer on mine! I even had to google ‘best series’ to hit 10 and I forgot one that I actually want to read NOW.
I was a little wary of Cinder too…until I read it. And it lead me to Scarlet, which was even better.
I can’t even form words about how immediately you need to read the Jessica Darling series…oh wait, yes I can – MARCUS FLUTIE.
Harry Potter isn’t as unforgiveable as everyone makes it out to be. I think if you were a certain age when it came out it just wasn’t appealing – I was in 8th grade when it started getting really popular and I definitely did not want to read about an 11 year old boy who did magic. The first time I tried to read it I didn’t like it. It took me years to come around to it.
I think I was in the same boat…. plus I’ve always kinda gone against the grain, so when everyone was going nuts over Harry Potter…. I was thinking ‘HELL NO I WON’T!’ and never gave in. I’ve heard many things about that Marcus Flutie…
Mmmhmm. From the time I saw you have not read HP, I pulled out the paper bag for your head. Hahaha. I am just kidding. There are so many series I got to explore too. Thanks for sharing yours.
It’s crazy how many books are out there. When I first started reading YA, I’d read a series and think…. ahhh this sucks. I’ll never find another series like that, but ever since I started blogging and having books constantly thrown in my face it seems like I’ll never get to all the great ones.
*flails* Obviously, I’m not going to give you a hard time about HP. At least you’ve seen the movies. I haven’t even done that. But Graceling?! Aw, Betty, they’re SO GOOD!
Also, Percy Jackson is an adorable series. It’s MG and so much fun.
Thanks for commenting on my post!

Eeeek… I was so close to getting Graceling yesterday, but ended up putting it back down as usual! Grrrr.
Thanks for supporting my Anti-Harryness.
Start with Harry Potter of course!!! Haha. Some of my favorites are the Lunar Chronicles (okay, I’ve only read Cinder so far but it was awesome) and Graceling (again….. why have I only read book one?) I actually wasn’t a huge fan of John Marsden’s series but I know a lot of people really liked them!!
Good luck!
See!! I don’t get it…. I mean I guess I do…. some books are love or hate. I can’t fathom why anyone would hate Shatter Me & Unravel Me, yet some do. Plus, I hated the Matched series, but others loved it. I guess it’s a gamble. I def need to get on Cinder.
I actually hated shatter me lol!! Well, not hate, but I didn’t like the writing so I didn’t finish it. Now you hate me! Haha
I don’t hate you… now I REAAAALLY love you. If you hate a book, I know I should add it to my tbr list. hahaha
Oh I understand…I have to read things in order too. Start with Harry Potter and then go to The Lunar Chronicles. Seriously good reading right there!
Man… looks like Harry Potter needs to be read like yesterday!
The Percy Jackson series is a lot of fun, and I’ve heard really awesome things about Jessica Darling. But you NEED to read The Daughter of Smoke & Bone, especially for the second book, which was unbelievably awesome.
I almost got Daughter of Smoke & Bone at the bookstore yesterday!! It was in my hand, but then I saw a book I wanted to read a few months ago– pre twitter, pre blogging days. haha So I went for it!! It’s in my amazon car though so… SOON!!
Harry Potter? Sadface. You really should fix that. Percy Jackson is also like one of my favorite series everrrr, it’s so much fun. Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Cinder are both really great, but I’m with you on Altered and Graceling. Really need to get around to those.
Perhaps I’ll make it a goal to get through Harry Potter this year. Will I want to read them all right away though or could I handle one a month without dying of suspense?
*thinks of appropriate Harry Potter comment* *decides to ignore it this one time* WHAT? You haven’t read Percy Jackson? Okay, I’m kidding. But I do love those books a whole lot. Trust me, both Cinder and Scarlet are so different from regular fairy tale retellings. There’s just too much going on to focus on that for a long time. I also NEED to start the Infernal Devices, and probably Graceling, Jessica Darling and Daughter of Smoke and Bone… and I hope you decide to read Altered soon because I really liked it
And what’s that? Oh. Read Mara Dyer. Now. (I’m actually a bit nervous lol. What if you don’t like it?! No. You have to.) <3
We really need to start reading some of these together!! I think I’m gunna attempt to read 1 Harry Potter a month. Pretty sure you need to get me a trophy if I finish the whole series by Christmas.
DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is one of my favorites!
Here’s Mine @ Pinkindle Reads & Reviews
Percy Jackson!! He will forever be my favorite fictional boy (well, he’s kind of tied with Edward Elric, but still.) The books are hilarious and full of adventure, but they don’t skimp on the emotion (as much as middle grade generally has, at least.) Seriously, go read them. Then read the Heroes of Olympus. Just try to tell me you don’t love Percy once you’re done ;P
I have read all but the last Harry Potter. Once the last one came out I just couldn’t bring myself to read them anymore. I did really like them so maybe I will get back to it some day. I love the Jessica Darling series. Read it! lol I also need to read Maya Dyer and The Lunar Chronicles.
I’ve already said this on another post, but I will say it again: I totally support you reading the Harry Potter series. Those books shaped my childhood, and they’re just a phenomenal example of storytelling. I will be available for moral support and random tweet-versations on Twitter as you read!
And, and, and Percy Jackson is FUN. It won’t take you long to blow through those five books because they’re really easy to read! I enjoyed the combination of mythology and contemporary in the stories, and the idea behind the entire series is fantastic.
The Lunar Chronicles is another series I’m a huge advocate of. Even though it starts off a bit slow, Cinder is PHENOMENAL. I really think you should give this one a try, if only to encounter the awesome storytelling from Marissa.
I’m hoping to read the Jessica Darling series this year, probably in the summer. It seems like the perfect summer series to me!
